Focus Is the Key to Success

You know the situation; you come home late at night; you are tired and it is dark. You fumble with your keys – why do all keys look alike in the dark? You finally find a key that seems to fit your front door, but the key will not go into to the keyhole. You try again and again, but it does not work. You conclude it must be the wrong key and you fumble a bit with the bunch of keys. You remind yourself to sort out the keys you do not need anymore; you will definitely do it tomorrow.

Another key seems to be the right one – or is this the same key as you tried before? You give it a try but keeps missing the keyhole; you start getting annoyed; you bend down to get a better look at the keyhole but you still miss the keyhole. After a while you are in a very bad mood and you toss the keys start knocking the door until someone opens it. It does not seem to open and you recall that you live alone and there is no one behind the door to open it.

How do you get in? How do you reach your goal? Not by trying random keys and by missing the target over and over! To unlock the door and get in you need to focus. You have to find the right key and focus on the target to unlock that door. If the door is still locked then you need to evaluate if you have the right key and if it is focused.

I have been writing this blog for about four months and another in Danish for a little more than a month. The Danish blog is about reflexology and it is written in Danish and it seems to be more focused than this blog is. This blog does not seem to catch on. That is why I decided to re-evaluate and ask myself: Do I have the right key and am I focused? My answer was: No!

Well, I do write about life improvement and development but the topic is too broad. I realise that I have to narrow it down if I want success. That is what I am working on right now; I want to narrow down the focus to be able to hit the target and unlock the door to success.

A few days ago I started a series about tests to find your personal profile; they are fun and interesting and I really recommend exploring tests that will give you greater insight, but I also have to let you down and start narrowing down my focus on this blog. I am not going to give you more test ideas but I will take you on a small journey that will show you how I find my focus on this blog.

Your Personality 1: Jung’s Personality Types

In my last post I raised the question: Who are you? I did not have the answer and I cannot tell you who you are. I cannot tell you because you are the only one who knows; or should know. If you are reading this, probability is that you do not know whom you are. I have realised that a lot of people do not know what to answer when they are asked the question: Who are you?

What would you write if I asked you to write a four-line description of yourself? Your height, age and weight barely take one line. You have to spend time getting to know yourself, because every day of your life you need to communicate who you are in order to stay on a good path that will lead you to your dreams and goals.

I know that it is not an easy task to do, but I have decided to spend the next 31 days finding methods for you to make your own personal profile. Every day you can look up a new test or method that will teach you something new about yourself and by the end of the next 31 days you will have a good idea about who you are and whom you want to become.

Jung personality type test

Carl Jung found that people could be divided into different types and he discovered 16 different types of people (well, actually he made the basic theory to the 16 types that was developed by Meyers and Briggs, but I am trying to keep the post short). Most of the tests that are used by companies today when hiring new people are based on Jung’s personality types.

The Internet have hundreds of test and but I ended up choosing two sites I will recommend to you. One site has a small test with only 56 questions that will calculate your type. This site does not have a very good description of the 16 types, so I have found a link with a very comprehensive description. You can find the links at the bottom of this post.

This test will show you if you have an introverted or an extroverted attitude. It will show you how you perceive information and how you make decisions. It will also give you an idea about what kind of lifestyle that you prefer. Mind that the result of the test will change over time, because you develop yourself. Tests do not represent the truth but they are very good tools for personal development.

How To Use Personality Tests

There are many types of tests available to help you discover yourself. Some of the tests are well documented and widely used by companies all over the world, other tests are homemade just to entertain you while surfing the net or reading a magazine. I believe that any test can serve you if you use it right.

A few years ago I was working at an athletic organisation and one morning I came to work and saw one of my colleagues read a newspaper. I noticed that the newspaper was a paper of poor quality with a lot of gossip and I could not help comment this. I knew that my colleague was smart and I did not understand why he would read this paper. I learned a very important lesson that day when he replied: “Rumours do not come from nothing!”

I learned that even though the quality was poor the paper had something to offer if I understand how to read it. The same goes for tests: You can always use the result for something if you use it right. If you take a test in a random magazine then do not expect that it will reveal the truth about you. It will merely point you in some direction that you can use as a hint. If other tests show some similar results then it probably reflects some truth about you.

E.g. if you take ten magazine tests that all say that you are introvert then there is something to it, after all. The important thing is that the result of whatever test you make will give you some understanding of whom you are.

Personality tests like “Jung Typology Test” is based on Carl Jung’s research in astrology. But even though few people would use astrology when hiring staff they will use the Jung Typology Test because it will help to understand what type of person you are.
