Why Physiological Habits Are More Important Than Anything Else

The physiological habits are the habits you maintain to fulfil your physiological needs. They are the need for sleep, the need for eating, the need for exercise and the need for keeping a good health. I have grouped the habits in four groups: Sleep, exercise, diet and cleansing.

In the next level in the hierarchy of habits you find the habits you need to uphold a feeling of being safe and secure. This level is the safety habits and encompasses home, work, economy and order. But before you can start developing habit on this level you need to master the habits of the physiological level.

Let us assume that you have just been dismissed and now you don’t have a job. Without a job you don’t have any income. Without an income you cannot pay your bills etc. This is a very stressful situation. If you want to find a new job you have to keep peace of mind, stay focused and optimise your efforts to find a new job.

Do you think you will succeed in getting a new job if you are tired, hungry and have a bad health? No, you will not. If you were to hire a person for a job then you would choose a candidate that seem enthusiastic, energized, happy and by good health. You would want a person with a good spirit! That is exactly why you have to work on these characteristics by mastering your physiological habits.

Which Habits Are Going to Rule Your Life?

Take charge of your habits; if you do not choose your habits then habits will form themselves and those habits will not always be good habits. Habits that form themselves will certainly not lead you towards your dreams and goals of life. It is your habits that form who you are and where you are going so they are too important to be left on their own.

If you are not cautious then bad habits will form themselves little by little; it will not happen over night but it will feel like it. They will define who you are and they will get you trapped in the life you did not want and some day you will wake up thinking: – What am I doing here and how did I get here?

You need a bit of proactive behaviour and start defining your goals for today, tomorrow, next week and three years from now. Discover the habits you need to get there and start working on these habits. Mind that habits will take anything between 1 and 6 months to form and they take a lot of work, but it is possible as long as you are determined to do it.

There are no limits to the direction you want your life to go, you just have to form the right habits to get in that direction. Take charge of your habits and be the master of your destiny!

How Your Thoughts Become Your Destiny

Browsing the Internet for quotes I found this one:

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

I am not sure who the original source is but after a quick search I found that a Finnish opera singer, Tom Krause, should be the source. Actually the source is not important; the quote is good anyway.

The quote stresses how thoughts become your destiny following a pattern that makes your thought become your reality.

Thoughts – words – actions – habits – character – destiny

Let us say that you have a negative thought… but where does that thought come from? Did you wake up this morning saying: “Today I will have only negative thoughts!” No, I do not think so. The thought is always induced by something; maybe it was induced by some experience or event. This means we need something prior to thought in the pattern from the quote – like ‘event’?

Yes, event makes sense, but it will not fit the quote because you cannot watch your events; they would be out of your control. But what is not out of your control is your perception of events. You can choose how you will perceive an event or experience. You have the power to choose to see life from a positive angle rather than a negative. I think that is what the quote is trying to tell us.

If you choose to perceive events from a negative focus you will convey the experience in negative words and they will induce some kind of negative action. If you keep doing this then your negative attitude will become a habit. From one of my other posts you know that habits are the building blocks of your life and if you choose to build your personality from negative building blocks then your life and destiny is going to be a negative experience.

Do you want that? No, you do not – that is not the nature of man. We want security and happiness and you can get that if you start watching your thoughts.

A New Habit Takes Time

Habits are difficult to break and they are difficult to make. The good news is that you can make a new habit but it will take a lot of effort to do. Do not waste time trying to break an old habit because you cannot. I do not believe in breaking habits. You have a habit because it fulfils a need you have. Instead of breaking a habit you should figure out why you have that habit and based on what you find you can make a new habit.

Your body takes about three weeks to get used to something new; it will adapt to new conditions and influences in just three weeks. E.g. if you prefer to drink a certain brand of coffee and you choose to change brand and drink the new brand for about three weeks then you will most likely prefer the new brand over the old one.

It is important, though, that you have your mind set on this change because if you say to yourself: “This coffee really sucks!” every time you drink the new brand, then your mind will focus on the old brand and nothing will change. It is essential that you want the change.

It takes more time to make it a habit

Getting used to something new is not enough to make it a habit. The three weeks as a rule of thumb is to be seen everywhere, but a habit takes the time a habit takes. How long a habit takes to be formed depends on the nature of the habit and the person trying to make the habit. Research shows that a habit takes everything between 18 to 254 days to form. To make sure that your habit will stick you have to keep your focus and mind set on your new habit for 3-8 months. You have to perform your habit every day and not miss a single day. Habits take hard work, but they are usually worth it if you are trying to make good habits.

It is easy to make a choice. What stops people from making a choice, is that they are afraid of the outcome of that specific choice. It is the fear of uncertainty that stops people from making a choice. But you cannot escape the fact that you have to make choices to live your life; if you avoid making decisions your life will become very difficult.

If you are unhappy, then choose to be happy; if you want to be rich, then choose to be rich; if you want a partner, then choose to get one; if you want to loose weight then, choose to loose weight. It sounds so easy to do, does it not? Let me reveal a secret for you that have been kept secret for you until today: It is that easy! Once you realise how easy it is you will wonder why you have not done this before.

If you want something to happen in your life then you have to do something to make it happen. Action involves decisions; you need to decide what to do to take action and make things happen. Your future depends on the choices you make and if you do not make any choices then you do not have a future.

You get exactly what you ask for; and if all you ask for is fear of choosing then all you will get is stagnation and fear. But I have I solution to your problem of fear: – choose not to be afraid. Choose to trust that your choice is a good one. The choices you make are based on what you feel is good for you and what you want in the future. If you let anyone else decide what is good for you, then you will never get what you want from life. Then you would be living someone else’s life and not your own life.

When you have made a choice making something happen you will know deep down inside yourself that you will succeed. When you have made a specific choice you will be focused and you will do what it takes to carry out that decision. When you have done it you will feel a rush because you have overcome fear and you experienced the intoxicating feeling doing it.

Now go face your fears and make those choices to create your future!
