Would you like to know how close you are to success? Then start monitoring your progress; I will show you how you can get started.
I take it that you have read my post about setting goals and by now you have discovered where you are and where you want to go. Maybe you have already taken action, but not knowing how you progress can be demotivating. E.g. you are driving from city A to city B; the only thing you know is how to get there; you have no idea how far it is or how long it will take to get from A to B. That can be very frustrating because you need to plan you trip. You need to know if you have to bring food, stop for gas or sleep at a motel. If you just drive and feel hungry or fall asleep you will become irritated and demotivated. The trip will not be fun!
To make sure that you are enthusiastic about the process towards your goal you need to know how you progress. You have to know what you have accomplished and what you have yet to do to reach your goal.
Here are 3 easy steps to monitor your progress and stay enthusiastic:
- Make a list of major tasks you need to do. If you are working on building your self-esteem then your list could look like this.
- Make a to-do list of subsidiary tasks you have to complete to finish a major task. Make sure that you have a list for every day and check the items as you finish them.
- Evaluate you progress by the end of the day. How did do on your to-dos and what can you do better tomorrow?
When you monitor personal progress make sure that you have both measurable and non-measurable goals (E.g. how many smiles did you collect today and how content do you feel?). Also note that plans have to be flexible; a plan is only guiding and conditions change along the way. Not finishing your to-do list does not equal failure! It merely proves that you have learned how to do better the next day.
