3 Ways To Take Responsibility For Your Life

Life © by gfpeck

Do you know that kind of people who always seem to be able to point out things they do not like? Maybe you are one of them even if you do not know it? We all do it now and then because it is so easy to point out other people’s mistakes and wrong doings. When we do it we disclaim responsibility.

It is always possible to blame others for things we do not like and sometimes the blame is just, but what good does it bring you to point it out? By pointing out something negative you only make things worse. If there is something you do not like, then take responsibility and change the situation. If it is not important enough for you to do something about then change your focus.

  1. Listen to yourself. Do you use negative terms when you talk to other people? Then consider if there is something you are unsatisfied with.
  2. Ask. If you point out negative circumstances then ask yourself: What good does it do to me or to others that I point out the negative and what can I do about it?
  3. Stop making excuses. There is always a reason that things are as they are, but what good does it do that you point it out?

Example: “I am late because it was raining”, you excuse. How does that excuse change the fact that people have been waiting for you and maybe missed out something? You put the blame on the weather! “But I had to take the bus because I did not have shoes to wear in the rain”, you justify. Stop! You need to ask yourself: “What can I say to give value to the people who were waiting?” and “What can I do to prevent this from happening again?”

If there is something you do not like, and you, for some reason cannot do anything about, then leave it and put focus on something positive, something that brings value to you and others.

Story from real life: I do not like to see dog poo lie around in the city and about 15 years ago there was a man who felt disgusted about dog poo, just like I do. I chose to change focus because I do not know what to do to change it. But this man took action. He bought a bunch of small flags on sticks and every time he saw dog poo he put a small flag in it. He made a point in a positive way that lead dog owners to do something about the problem.
